HC Deb 19 January 1970 vol 794 c73W
Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will call for a report from the chief constable as to the reasons why police on duty at the international rugby match between Scotland and South Africa at Murrayfield did not display their police numbers; and if he will call for reports from chief constables, throughout Scotland on their general practice in relation to the display by police of police numbers when involved in crowd control duties.

Mr. Ross

The chief constable has informed me that the raincoats issued to the Edinburgh police have never had identification numbers attached but that, in the light of events at the Springbok match at Murrayfield, he is now reconsidering the present arrangement. I am aware that practice in relation to the attachment of numbers to raincoats varies throughout Scotland and I am asking chief constables to consider the matter.
