HC Deb 19 January 1970 vol 794 cc51-2W
Mr. Wall

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what consultations were undertaken before it was decided to abolish the rum ration; and on what basis the number of beers ratings are to be allowed to purchase was decided.

Dr. David Owen

A cross-section of opinion was sought from officers and ratings in commands both at home and abroad before a decision was made. The additional quantity of beer allowed was largely determined by the availability of stowage space in H.M. Ships.
