HC Deb 19 January 1970 vol 794 c65W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why he will not take steps to prevent newspaper proprietors from claiming as expenses allowed against profits for tax purposes sums of money paid to convicted criminals, near criminals, associates of criminals and wives of criminals for articles alleged to be written by these persons, advocating obtaining money by criminal means.

Mr. Taverne

As my right hon. Friend told my hon. Friend the Member for Bassetlaw (Mr. Ashton) on 10th November, 1969, he is aware of public concern and is considering whether steps could be taken to deal with this matter. However I do not think that my hon. Friend's specific suggestion would be practicable.—[Vol 791, c. 31.]
