HC Deb 19 January 1970 vol 794 cc29-30W
87. Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his estimate of the net cost to the London Borough of Brent, after allowing for the proportion of Exchequer grant, of converting the home of Mrs. Joan Cant in order that she may use her kidney machine at home instead of remaining under hospital dialysis, and of the annual cost to the National Health Service on the basis that for the rest of her life she is dialysed in hospital; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. John Dunwoody

I understand that Brent London Borough Council has agreed to meet the cost, estimated at £520–£550, of installing a kidney machine at this patient's home. The annual cost of maintaining a National Health Service patient on hospital dialysis is approximately £2,200 and on home dialysis £1,500. The latter cost would be borne by the hospital since patients on home dialysis remain under the clinical responsibility of the hospital.
