HC Deb 19 January 1970 vol 794 cc10-1W
66. Mr. Howie

asked the Minister of Technology what representations he has had concerning last year's decline in production in the motor manufacturing industry; and what steps he is taking to reverse it.

Mr. Benn

My right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer and I met representatives of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders on 24th July, 1969, and my right hon. Friend the Paymaster-General and I met representatives of the Motor Agents Association on 15th October, 1969. Although production of cars in 1969 was less than in 1968, total production, including commercial vehicles, was probably little different, I am keeping a close watch on the situation.

70. Mr. Edelman

asked the Minister of Technology what studies he has made of the new safety regulations enforced by the United States administration in connection with the manufacture of motor cars; and, following these studies, what advice he has given to the British motor industry.

Dr. Ernest Davies

The effects of these safety regulations on vehicle design and production are mainly a matter for the industry. However, each change in the regulations is noted by the Department and discussions are held with the industry as necessary.
