HC Deb 26 February 1970 vol 796 c383W
58. Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity why she approved the substantial salary increases for members of new town development corporations and other similar public bodies; what is the range of increase expressed in money and percentage terms; and how many persons are involved.

Mr. Harold Walker

My right hon. Friend the Minister of Housing and Local Government approved increases with effect from 1st January, 1970 in the remuneration of chairmen, deputy chairmen and members of the Commission for the New Towns and of the new town development corporations in England, following the Government's decision to accept the recommendations of the National Board for Prices and Incomes on increases in salary for members of the boards of nationalised industries.

The increases were the first for seven years, and range from £200 to £900. They represent roughly between 4¾ and 5¾ per cent. for each year during this period. One hundred and forty persons in England are affected. In regard to other similar public bodies, if the hon. Member will specify which he has in mind, I shall deal with his request.
