Mr. Dempsey

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many policemen were murdered in the course of their duty in each year since 1918; and if he will indicate The years when capital punishment was and was not in force.

Figures are not available for 1918–48, but during the period 1949 to 1969 four police officers were murdered in Scotland in the course of their duty as follows:

1952 1
1969 2 (a single incident)

Capital punishment was in force for the murder of a police office acting in the execution of his duty until 9th November, 1965.
