HC Deb 24 February 1970 vol 796 c284W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware of the growing difficulties of the free flow of traffic on the roads and streets in big cities in general and London in particular; and what recent action he has taken, or intends taking, to speed up the flow of road traffic.

Mr. Mulley

This year I expect to provide over —75 million grant towards improvements on urban roads, including those in London. I intend to encourage the development of an expanding urban road programme during the 1970's. I am also encouraging local traffic authorities to use their now very wide powers for traffic management not only to ensure efficient use of the roads but also in the interests of road safety and amenity.
