HC Deb 24 February 1970 vol 796 cc307-8W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what studies have been made by his Department into comparative failure rates between universities and between faculties and departments within universities; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Fowler

The University Grants Committee published in 1968 a report of its "Inquiry into Student Progress" showing, by university and by subject group, the numbers and proportions of students expected to obtain a first degree in 1965–66 who in fact did so; did so after an extra year; or left without obtaining a degree. Developments since then were described by the University Grants Committee in its annual surveys for 1967–68 and 1968–69 (Cmnd. 3914 and 4261).
