§ 67. Mr. H. Boardmanasked the Minister of Transport if he will take steps to introduce for the use of school crossing attendants signs equipped with a red flashing light, for use in darkness or bad light.
Mr. Bob BrownDemonstrations of prototypes have shown that putting a flashing light on these portable signs would confuse drivers rather than help them identify the message on the sign, including the obligation to stop. Illumination by a steady white light, as permitted by the regulations, is both safer and more reliable. In addition, local authorities can reflectorise the surface of the sign and, at difficult sites, can add flashing amber units to the patrol warning sign.
