asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many people are on the waiting list for admittance to hospital within the Gateshead and district area; and what steps are being taken to reduce this number.

1,056 on 31st December, 1969. The Newcastle Regional Hospital Board has plans for the major development of Queen Elizabeth Hospital as a district general hospital and is considering whether augmentation of staff can provide more immediate relief.
