HC Deb 23 February 1970 vol 796 cc239-40W
Mr. Dickens

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the estimated cost in increased taxation and National Insurance contribution of raising the basic retirement pension to £5 10s. per week for a single person and £9 per week for a married couple, with consequential improvements to supplementary benefits.

Mr. David Ennals

The total cost of raising the basic retirement pension to £5 10s. a week for a single person and £9 a week for a married couple would be about £180 million a year. If the cost were met by contributors and the

undergraduates such arrangements would normally be initiated by medical schools. I have no plans for any central arrangements.
