HC Deb 23 February 1970 vol 796 c252W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what further action he is taking to improve prison conditions, and particularly the possibility of ending the use of chamber pots and slopping out.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I would refer my hon. Friend to paragraphs 181–6 generally and paragraph 185 in particular of the White Paper "People in Prison" (Cmnd. 4214).

Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give the number of prisoners detained in prisons built over 100 years. 75 years, 50 years and 25 years ago, respectively; and what action he is taking to modernise these buildings.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The answer to the first part of the Question, in relation to prisons in England and Wales, is 18,400. 23,200, 23,500 and 26,800 respectively. As regards the second part, I would refer my hon. Friend to paragraphs 181–6 of the White Paper "People in Prison" (Cmnd. 4214).
