HC Deb 23 February 1970 vol 796 cc253-4W
Mr. Judd

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many British passport holders from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia have been held under detention on arrival in Great Britain since the passing of the Commonwealth Immigrants Act 1968; how many non-British passport-holding Commonwealth citizens from these countries have been admitted during this period; how many such citizens have sought entry during this period; and whether he will arrange a conference between representatives of all concerned in Great Britain, East Africa and Asia to review the situation.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

I regret that the information requested in the first part of the Question is not available. The numbers of citizens of the countries referred to who were admitted to the United Kingdom between 1st March, 1968 and 31st December, 1969, and the numbers refused admission, are as follows:

Admitted Refused
Kenya 7,308 23
Tanzania 5,230 20
Uganda 4,484 2
Zambia 2,379 4

These are all admissions, including visitors, students and others coming for temporary purposes.

In reply to the last part of the Question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply given by the Joint Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to a Question by the hon. Member for Bromley (Mr. Hunt) on 16th February.—[Vol. 796, c. 18.]
