HC Deb 20 February 1970 vol 796 c199W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many places there are in teacher training colleges compared with the number of student teachers; and what further plans he has for expansion.

Mr. Fowler

The provisional number of students at present undergoing courses of initial or further training in colleges of education, colleges of education (technical) and departments of education in technical colleges is 111,077. A few colleges failed to fill all their places at the beginning of the current academic year while others recruited more than their target numbers. Existing plans provide for an increase in the number of places to 119,000 over the next 3–4 years.
