HC Deb 19 February 1970 vol 796 cc195-6W
Mr. Padley

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what plans he has for a northern bypass of Bridgend; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. George Thomas

I am immediately adding to the preparation pool a new motorway bypass of Bridgend. This will be designed as a continuation of the Cardiff Intermediate bypass from Pencoed and will run north of Bridgend to join the eastern end of the Pyle bypass. It will be part of the ultimate extension of the M4. Subject to the completion of the statutory processes I hope to see work begin in 1974. This will then with other schemes being prepared, provide by 1976 a continuous dual carriageway road to motorway or near motorway standards to as far west as Swansea.
