HC Deb 19 February 1970 vol 796 c171W
Mr. Randall

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will obtain a report from the Chief Constable on how many drivers in Durham and Gateshead, respectively, have been asked to take the breathalyser test, how many have refused, how many were found positive, how many were found negative, and how these figures compare with those for other comparable areas.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

From 9th October, 1967, to 31st December, 1968, in the area now policed by the Durham Constabulary, the figures were 2,511, 111, 1,050 and 1,350. These include, respecticely, 142, 7, 73 and 62 for what was till October, 1968, the Gateshead police area. During 1969, in the area of the Durham Constabulary, the figures were 1,985, 129, 1,039 and 817. Separate figures for the former Gateshead police area have not been maintained since the end of 1968.

If my hon. Friend would care to let me know what other police areas he considers comparable with Durham, I will try to let him have figures. The provisional figures for 1969 for England and Wales as a whole are 58,988, 3.905, 31,770 and 23,313.
