HC Deb 18 February 1970 vol 796 cc120-1W
58. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will state his plans for the education and constructive training for good citizenship of persons in Her Majesty's prisons in Scotland and report on the number and trend of progress made by these plans.

Mr. Buchan

The principles of good citizenship are fostered in our prisons by the influence and example of staff and by the provision of an ordered environment, steady employment and, for prisoners with longer sentences, a range of educational facilities. In order to inculcate the habit of meaningful work it is our aim, by using modern management and industrial techniques, to develop methods of working which approximate as closely as possible to those outside.

The use of evening classes is being extended and prisoners are encouraged to discover new fields of vocational and other interests: there are at present over 50 evening classes per week with an average attendance of over 800 prisoners.
