HC Deb 18 February 1970 vol 796 c122W
Mr. Galbraith

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what he estimates will be the cost, including compensation, of widening Great Western Road, Glasgow, from Anniesland Cross to Byres Road, from Byres Road to Kelvin Bridge, and from Kelvin Bridge to St. George's Cross; when he estimates each section will be completed; and what is the cost of replacing the existing Kelvin Bridge.

Mr. Ross

Dual carriageways already exist from Anniesland Cross to Beaconsfield Road. Subject to my confirmation of the necessary Compulsory Purchase Order, widening of the section between Beaconsfield Road and Byres Road should be completed in the autumn of 1972. Glasgow Corporation's proposals to begin improvement of the remaining sections during the period 1971–74 are still being considered.

The Corporation's present estimates of the cost of these works, including compensation, is as follows:

Scheme Estimated cost (including compensation)
£m.
Beaconsfield Road-Byres Road 1.50
Byres Road-St. George's Cross 1.35*
Improvement of junction at Anniesland Cross 0.80
* Includes £0.115m. for strengthening Kelvin Bridge.
