HC Deb 18 February 1970 vol 796 cc139-40W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity whether she will cause an investigation to be made to ascertain to what extent the immigration of labour into Great Britain from the countries of the Six on Great Britain entering the Common Market will affect industrial relations, due to language and other problems, in such industries as coalmining, electricity, gas, water and engineering; and whether she will now arrange to discuss these problems with the Trades Union Congress.

Mr. Harold Walker

My right hon. Friend, the Prime Minister said on 8th May, 1967, that the Government do not believe that there is likely to be any large net increase in the number of E.E.C. nationals coming here to work. I do not consider an investigation is necessary into the problems my hon. Friend refers to, but I will consider at the appropriate time the question of discussions with the Trade Union Congress.
