HC Deb 18 February 1970 vol 796 cc154-5W
Mr. Chichester-Clark

asked the Minister of Public Building and Works what progress has been made in implementing the Report of the Committee on the Application of Computers in the Construction Industry; and what is his policy regarding its Report.

Mr. Loughlin

The committee's work is of a continuing nature. A number of reports on particular aspects have been published—I will send the hon. Member details—and more are expected. The main areas of progress are:

  1. (1) development of GENESYS, a general computer system for structural engineers;
  2. (2) proposals for a rational information system for construction;
  3. (3) discussions on the use of computers by contractors.

Work is also proceeding in the architectual, quantity surveying and services engineering fields.

I look to the committee to keep under review the possibilities of using computers in construction and to recommend co-ordinated action to expand the application of existing knowledge and make possible further advances.
