§ Mr. Hugh Jenkinsasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, having regard to the fact that the total cost to the Exchequer in taxation relief to house purchasers on mortgage exceeds the total amount of council house subsidies, he will take steps to increase the latter so that the average subsidy on council houses equals the average amount of taxation relief; and if he will estimate the cost of this increase to the Exchequer.
§ Mr. William RodgersIf contributions from rate funds are brought into the picture the average amount of assistance given to council tenants is not very different from the average amount of tax relief given to owner occupiers with a mortgage and, in fact, exceeds the average for all owner occupiers taken together.
