§ 49. Mr. Gregoryasked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications what action he is taking to prevent pirate radio stations broadcasting from ships in the North Sea.
§ Mr. StonehouseI have arranged for monitoring any such broadcasts and for identification of the ships. One Panamanian ship broadcasting on maritime frequencies has been identified off the coast of Holland. The authorities in Panama have been asked by the United Kingdom and Norway to put a stop to the transmissions. Other European countries are also monitoring the broadcasts and are co-operating with us.
§ 50. Mr. Gregoryasked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications what assurances he has received from European countries of co-operation in preventing pirate television broadcasting from aircraft; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. StonehouseThe threat of pirate television broadcasting has been discussed with European countries. If it materialises, concerted action will include withdrawal of aircraft registration, denial of4W airport facilities and legal measures against the individuals involved. Ten countries already have, and four more are preparing, measures similar to our Marine Etc. Broadcasting (Offences) Act 1967. Assurances of co-operation have been received from every Western European country within practicable flying distance of the North Sea.
