HC Deb 12 February 1970 vol 795 cc397-8W
74. Mr. Eldon Griffiths

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether it remains the policy of Her Majesty's Government to permit an unemployment rate between 1½ and 2 per cent. of the work force.

Mr. William Rodgers

Our policy now, as always, is to reduce unemployment to the minimum consistent with maintaining a strong balance of payments position and reasonable stability in domestic costs and prices. In addition, our policies for the redistribution of industry should enable the economy to run at a higher average pressure of demand without incurring the penalties which followed so often in the past.
