24. Mr. John Wells

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will obtain a report from the Chief Constable on the number of persons engaged in the Kent Police Force in February 1938, February 1946 and at the last convenient date, the cost of the force for those three months or the cost for the years, 1938, 1946 and the estimated cost for the last financial year.

Mr. Callaghan

The total strength in February, 1938 of the county force and the nine borough forces was 1,244. The strength of the combined force was 1,276 in February, 1946 and 1,995 in January, 1970. The total annual costs were:

  • £483,206 for 1937–38;
  • £818,670 for 1945–46 and
  • £5,718,890 for 1968–69.
