Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what percentage of the next £1,000 of his earnings above £5,000, £8,500, £10,000 and £15,000 a year is now retained by a married man with two children under 11 years of age; and what are now the comparable figures at current rates of exchange for a similar man after payment of direct taxation in the United States of America, France, West Germany and Japan, based upon information he derives from international organisations.

1. The calculations assume that all income at each level is earned.
2. The figures are for California. The tax deducted includes Californian income tax which is partly deductible in computing Federal taxable income. The 2½ per cent. Federal surcharge for 1970 is included.
3. The 1970 surcharges on income tax are included.
4. The temporary 3 per cent. surcharge is included.
5. National, provincial (prefectural) and municipal income taxes are included.
6. The minimum standard expenses deductions have been taken into account in the calculations for the United States of America, France and West Germany.
