HC Deb 12 February 1970 vol 795 cc376-7W
33. Mr. Lawler

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, if he will call for a report from the Chief Constable as to why recruitment to the Birmingham police force is failing to keep pace with the rate of voluntary resignations, and, in particular, why trained police officers, with long periods of service are resigning.

Mr. Callaghan

Over the past four years recruitment has exceeded wastage from all causes, including normal retirements by 235. Following is a summary of the reasons given by the 90 men who resigned in 1969:

More remunerative employment elsewhere 53
Domestic reasons 19
Dislike of police work 11
Emigration 7
