Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total number of persons serving a sentence of imprisonment or detention in a young offenders' institution at the latest convenient date.

Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many persons in Scottish prisons and young offenders' institutions were serving sentences of six months and up to three years, over three years and up to 10 years, over 10 years and life sentences, respectively, at the latest convenient date.

Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average weekly cost of maintaining a person serving a prison sentence in Scotland.

Mr. Ross

£15 9s. 8d. in the year ended 31st March, 1969. This figure includes the cost of staff, food, clothing, bedding, earnings, heating, lighting and maintenance of buildings; it does not include any allowance for the capital cost of new building works.
