HC Deb 11 February 1970 vol 795 c355W
71. Sir J. Gilmour

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many birds, seals and other species of wild life have died or had to be destroyed this winter as a result of oil pollution in the North Sea off the east coast of Scotland.

Mr. Fowler

Approximately 2,500 birds have been found dead and about 4,600 badly-oiled birds had to be destroyed. Others died at sea apart from those that were washed up on shore. There is no evidence that seals or other species were killed by oil.
