Mr. Gardner

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the numbers of National Health Service consultants per 100,000 of the population in the Sheffield region as compared with the Metropolitan regions and the national average.

The numbers, in terms of whole-time equivalents, are:

Medical Dental
Sheffield region 11.7 0.4
Metropolitan regions 19.4 0.6
England and Wales 15.9 0.5

All these figures include teaching hospital staff, employed by boards of governors. 12 of the 22 undergraduate teaching hospitals and all the postgraduate teaching hospitals are in the four metropolitan regions.
