HC Deb 09 February 1970 vol 795 c238W
36. Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what steps he is taking to expedite progress towards implementation of the Salmon proposals for the re-structuring of gradings within the nursing profession

Mr. Crossman

Hospitals are being assisted by an expert team of nurses, doctors and administrators from my Department and by Regional Nursing Officers and the Chief Nursing officers of those hospitals which pioneered the initial trials of the new structure.

73. Mr. Willey

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what progress is being made in the revision of gradings in the nursing profession.

Mr. Crossman

The introduction of the new nursing management structure recommended by the Salmon Committee began in 19 selected hospital groups: thereafter Regional Hospital Boards were authorised to begin general implementation and 96 chief or principal nursing officers have been appointed so far. The negotiation of a salary structure for the new posts forms part of the general pay negotiations now in progress in the Nurses and Midwives Whitley Council.
