Mr. Randall

asked the Minister of Technology what progress has been made during the last two years in the placing of Government contracts with a view to assisting the electronics industry, together with the number and value of contracts placed with firms in the North-East.

Mr. Varley

In 1968 and 1969, the Ministry of Technology placed contracts, including those for procurement, with the electronics industry to a value of about £185 million. Of these, 174 contracts to a value of £300,000 were placed with firms in the North-East of England.
