Mr. David Howell

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he will give the number of non-industrial civil servants in central government in April, 1939, April, 1946, April, 1950 and April, of each subsequent year together with the most recent available figure.

The numbers of United Kingdom-based non-industrial civil servants, excluding Post Office staff, at the specified dates are shown below.

The figure for 1970 includes the staff of the Department for National Savings—approximately 15,000—who were included in Post Office numbers in earlier years.
