HC Deb 06 February 1970 vol 795 cc234-5W
Mr. Emery

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer in what areas he is using National Insurance numbers as the reference numbers for taxpayers; and what plans he has for extending their use so that all taxpayers have only one number for both National Insurance and taxation records.

Mr. Taverne

National Insurance numbers are used as reference numbers under P.A.Y.E. for employees whose tax affairs are dealt with at the Inland Revenue Computer Centre at East Kilbride in Scotland. They will also be used as the reference numbers for employees in other areas as the remaining Computer Centres come into operation over the next decade.
