HC Deb 06 February 1970 vol 795 cc222-3W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if fenfluramine treatment for obesity has been approved by the Medicines Commission; and if he will advise general practitioners on its prescription.

Mr. Crossman

Fenfluramine was available for medical use before either the Committee on Safety of Drugs or the Medicines Commission was established, and neither body has been asked to approve its sale. Adverse reactions are reported to the Committee on Safety of Drugs and will be kept under review. It is not my function to advise doctors on their choice of available drugs but Prescribers' Journal and Proplist have both made recent references to the use of fenfluramine.
