HC Deb 06 February 1970 vol 795 cc228-9W
Mr. Leslie Huckfield

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will make a statement about the near mid-air collision that occured over Wallasey on Thursday, 5th February.

Mr. Goronwy Roberts

On Thursday, 5th February, an Aer Lingus Boeing 737 aircraft, on route from Dublin to Manchester, reported an air miss with an Aero Commander aircraft. The Aero Commander was an executive aircraft on route from Rochester to Warton. The incident took place at 0910 hours. G.M.T. near the Wallasey Very High Frequency Omni Directional Radio Range (V.O.R.). Air Traffic Control had cleared the Boeing 737 to descend to flight level 60 (approximately 6,000 feet). On approaching this level, whilst flying in good weather, the Boeing pilot saw the Aero Commander aircraft cross his track one half to three quarters of a mile ahead. No avoiding action was necessary by either aircraft, but the separation distance was appreciably less than the minimum required to be provided in controlled airspace. An investigation into this has been put in hand immediately.
