HC Deb 05 February 1970 vol 795 c172W
63. Mr. Wiley

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what were the numbers of nursery schools in 1955 and at the latest available date.

Miss Lestor

The number of maintained nursery schools in England and Wales was 464 in January, 1955 and 470 in January 1969. Over the same period the total number of children under compulsory school age in all maintained schools increased from 200,000 to over 250,000. Another 10,000 full-time places in nursery schools and classes, providing for up to 20,000 children, will be provided under the first two phases of the urban programme.
