HC Deb 03 February 1970 vol 795 c84W
Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government if he will take steps to increase the average subsidy per council house tenant from £30 to £47 10s.

Mr. Freeson

The average annual basic subsidy for each new council dwelling in England and Wales is now about £148 a year—nearly three times the latter figure my hon. Friend has mentioned. Subsidy is not paid as an average amount per householder, but according to the costs incurred. As new house building proceeds, therefore, the average Exchequer subsidy for all council dwellings will continue to rise.
