Walker-Smithasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs by what authority he attends the meetings of the Monnet Committee; by what staff, drawn from what sources, he is attended; and what arrangements are made for his travel and accommodation, by whom, and at whose expense.
§ Mr. M. StewartAs to the first part of the Question, I have nothing to add to what my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister said in the House on this matter on 22nd July last, when he made it clear that I attend these meetings as a representative of the Labour Party.
As to the second and third part of the right hon. and learned Gentleman's Question, since I remain in charge of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office when attending these meetings I am accompanied by a private secretary and a detective, and my travel arrangements are made by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The costs of my travel are, however, met by the Labour Party when I travel solely for the purpose of attending meetings of the Action Committee.—[Vol. 787, c. 1498–1500.]
