HC Deb 02 February 1970 vol 795 c46W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will consider introducing legislation allowing electors of 18 years of age and over to seek election to local authorities and to Parliament.

Mr. Merlyn Rees

The Family Law Reform Act, 1969, specifically provided that the minimum age of candidates for election to Parliament and to local authorities should remain at 21. My right hon. Friend sees no reason to reopen an issue on which Parliament has so recently pronounced.
