HC Deb 18 December 1970 vol 808 cc479-80W
Dr. Miller

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action the Government has taken on Resolution (70) 12 adopted on 7th March, 1970 by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe relating to the control of sulphur dioxide emissions into the air.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

Several elements of our clean air policy operate to reduce emissions of sulphur dioxide. Ground-level concentrations of sulphur dioxide in this country have fallen by an average of one-third during the last 10 years, owing partly to growing domestic use of low-sulphur or non-sulphurous fuels and partly to better dispersal of industrial emissions through tall chimneys. I am advised that this tendency is likely to continue. Research by the nationalised industries and the oil companies into removing sulphur from fuels and flue gases is being watched by the Alkali Inspectorate.
