HC Deb 18 December 1970 vol 808 c475W
Mr. Kenneth Clarke

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will make a statement as to the circumstances of the accident which took place on the M1 motorway at Nuttall, Nottinghamshire, on 14th December, 1970.

Mr. Peyton

Four multiple accidents occurred in fog near the Nuthall Intersection at about 10 a.m. on 14th December. Fog warning lights were in operation.

The first accident involved 14 northbound vehicles and the other three 37 southbound vehicles. There were four deaths, five serious injuries and eight slight injuries. The northbound carriageway was re-opened at 2 p.m. and the southbound at 4 p.m. Excessive speeds did, I understand, play a considerable part.

Mr. Fowler

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many people have died and how many people have been injured as a result of accidents on the M1 motorway during 1970; and how these figures compare with 1968 and 1969.
