HC Deb 18 December 1970 vol 808 c522W
Mr. William Price

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he is aware of the delays in converting cash registers in time for the introduction of decimal currency; and what action he proposes to take;

(2) what action he is taking to encourage the conversion of all cash registers in time for the introduction of decimal currency.

Mr. Higgins

The Decimal Currency Board, which has the statutory responsibility for promoting arrangements for the adaptation or replacement of machines affected by decimalisation, informs me that its researches show progress with cash registers to be satisfactory. But it was never envisaged that all cash registers and other machines could be converted or replaced by D Day and, for this reason, there must be a change-over period of dual-currency working during which retailers can, if they wish, continue to trade in £ s. d.
