74. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will arrange to meet representatives of the Police Federation to discuss ways and means of resolving their request for a 35 per cent. salary increase for the police.

Mr. Carlisle

Police pay is a matter, in the first instance, for the Police Council, on which my right hon. Friend is represented.

77. Mr. Driberg

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what progress has been made in the negotiations on increased pay for the police.

Mr. Carlisle

On 11th December a revised offer was made by the official side but was not accepted by the staff side. There will be another meeting on 8th January.
