HC Deb 17 December 1970 vol 808 cc430-1W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what is the extent of exploration for petroleum gas in the Irish Sea and other waters off the Welsh coastline; what companies are involved; what are the risks of pollution; what is the extent of his supervision and control; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ridley

Exploratory surveys have been undertaken and two wells drilled in Liverpool Bay. Four licences in the area have been awarded to companies whose names have been published in the London Gazette. Licensees must avoid pollution and their drilling operations are subject to supervision by our inspectors. No pollution from these operations has been reported.
