HC Deb 15 December 1970 vol 808 cc331-2W
Mr. Kilfedder

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many university graduates were registered as unemployed in each of the last five years as at the January statistical count date.

Mr. van Straubenzee

The information is not available in exactly the form asked for. The booklet "First Employment of Graduates" issued by the University Grants Committee annually does, however, show the following numbers of United Kingdom students newly graduated with first degrees as still seeking employment at the time of compilation of the figures.

1964–65 407
1965–66 728
1966–67 1,234
1967–68 1,656
1968–69 1,886

These figures are subject to two possible sources of error: some of the graduates thus shown may actually have found employment by the end of the year and conversely some whose destinations are not known may still have been seeking employment at the end of the year.
