HC Deb 15 December 1970 vol 808 cc284-5W
Mr. John Hannam

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total of selective employment tax paid by the South-West Region during the year 1969–70; how much was returned in grants and regional employment premiums; and how much he estimates will be paid to the region in the year 1971–72 in investment allowances.

Mr. Maurice Macmillan

The gross amount of S.E.T. paid by the South-West Region in 1969–70 is estimated at £110 million. I cannot give a worthwhile estimate of the net amount after taking account of S.E.T. refunds.

Investment grants paid in 1969–70 totalled £19.6 million, and regional employment premiums and selective employment premiums £2.6 million.

Statistics of capital allowances are not available by regions, but—as stated in the White Paper (Cmnd. 4516)—there will be no appreciable cash flow to industry from the new system of tax allowances before 1972–73.
