Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he is satisfied that local authorities are adequately equipped to ensure regular inspection and supervision of premises intended for use as restaurants, hotels and snack bars, particularly in places where the numbers of such premises are increasing to meet the needs of growing tourist traffic; and if he will make a statement.

I would refer my right hon. Friend to my reply today to his Question to my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Social Services.

Inspections are carried out by the public health inspectors employed by the local authorities, and I have no reason to suppose that the inspectors are unable adequately to meet the demands laid on them.
