§ Mr Barry Jonesasked the Secretary of State for Wales how many fee-paying schools there are in Wales and in Flint-shire, primary and secondary; how many of these are recognised schools; how many fee-paying local authority schools there are in Wales; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Peter ThomasThere are 79 independent i.e. fee-paying schools in Wales. Of these 58 are schools recognised as efficient, 20 are schools finally registered and one school is provisionally registered.
Of the recognised schools, 22 are primary, 21 secondary, and 15 cover both primary and secondary pupils. Of the registered schools 13 are primary, 5 are secondary and 2 cover both primary and secondary pupils. The provisionally registered school is a primary school.
In Flintshire there are 7 fee-paying schools, of which 5 are recognised as efficient and 2 are registered schools. Of the recognised schools, 3 are primary, 1 secondary, and 1 covers both primary and secondary. The registered schools are primary schools.
In addition to the foregoing, there are 4 direct grant grammar schools in Wales at which fees are payable. Under the provisions of the Education Act, 1944, 311W as amended, fees are not chargeable in respect of any schools maintained by local education authorities.
