HC Deb 15 December 1970 vol 808 cc289-90W
83. Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a further statement on the provision of vehicles for the disabled.

Mr. Alison

My right hon. Friend has not yet completed his investigations.

84. Mr. Alfred Morris

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received on behalf of severely disabled persons, including thalidomide and other severely disabled children, who are unable to take advan- tage of the provisions of Section 20 of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act, 1970, because of the purported unsuitability of their wheelchairs for outdoor use; what action he is taking; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alison

Some hon. Members and welfare organisations have suggested that indoor powered wheelchairs should be permitted to be used outdoors when they are of a type claimed by the makers to be suitable. My right hon. Friend has been unable to agree to this proposal, because of the risks to the safety of the occupants.

86. Mr. Willey

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what action has been taken in the local authority areas in the Northern Region with regard to Section 2 of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act, 1970, about amenities to the disabled; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alison

I would refer the right hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for The Hartlepools (Mr. Leadbitter) on 2nd November.—[Vol. 805, c.282.]
